The Transition from Alesis QS-8 Piano to GigaStudio Piano (GigaPiano)
Why did I deal with GigaStudio ? Because of the better processor and the larger hard disk drives which I had recently owned I decided to give it a try. Moreover, I had got a good overall impression of it. Why not attempt to upgrade to a better sound ?!
Naturally, I was quite satisfied by my synthesizer's piano sound (Alesis QS-8 program True Stereo tweaked) but the piano of GigaStudio is even better. Let me also remind you of the fact that this very Alesis instrument is quite behind the times (first launched in 1997 if I can recall).
Interesting remarks henceforth : the attack of Alesis QS-8 piano lasts shorter enough ! Moreover, the lower notes have a louder sound than the higher ones while one is playing constantly at the same velocity across the keyboard : nevertheless, I had "normalized" this feature by programming the sound. Eventually, in GigaPiano the curve of the dynamic has more to do with an exponential function in contrast to the corresponding linear function that was the case in Alesis QS-8.
The first part of the 2nd English Suite of unsurpassable Johann Sebastian Bach was not having a good sound : at first I was playing the left hand notes of GigaPiano louder than necessary (naturally accustomed to the piano of Alesis QS-8).
While you are hitting the keys GigaPiano is giving you the same sense with that which the mechanism ("hammers") of the actual piano is creating : this very impression is born due to the excellent samples and the flawless programming which has been accomplished ! Well done !
Nevertheless, no one is perfect : the notes around the fourth line of the treble clef were "powerless" : so I had (all in a day's work! - I had already programmed a few Yamaha and EMU synthesizers in the past) to tweak the corresponding program. The whole point was that I made GigaStudio to use the sample of a different note when one of the "problematic" notes were played : this way the problem was easily solved (by changing the "regions" in the appropriate way). The previous procedure was implemented once again in the case of F sharp lying at the bottom of the treble clef that was - this time - rather "powerful" !
A last dream : Chopin's nocturnes are fitting the new piano perfectly !
