Well, I took the risk. I recently purchased two state-of-the-art DXi instruments for Sonar 2.2 running on Windows 2000 using a humble Pentium at 3 Ghz ! We are talking about Garritan Personal Orchestra and Zero-G Nostalgia. At my disbelief, everything is working perfectly now and older software (including feared GigaStudio 3) seems to co-operate well. Anyway, that was not a risk at all. My "older" Garritan Big Band dxi instrument worked perfectly for months and I knew it. Since all the new stuff uses the same philosophy (that is, it is powered by Native Instruments main software sampler) and both modules can also work as stand-alone, everything would be settled anyway. What I would like to say is that times have become especially generous for home studio musicians : by spending almost 350 euros I just acquired a vast platform of capabilites for music composition in a variety of genres. This includes : Nostalgia, a large collection of fantastic (and clean!) electronic sounds taken from almost all well-known synthesizers of the "analog golden age" (including some old pioneering samplers like Emulator) and Personal Orchestra, an equally impressive and enormous set of sounds referring (among others) to classical music. There has been no cuts and no compromises in the volume of the samples and the presets : Zero-G Nostalgia consists of more than 1300 patches and takes up 1,3 Gigabytes of storage space while Garritan Personal Orchestra is more than full of classical sounds (more than one players recorded, multiple instruments' sounds, good deal of useful articulations, a try to catch all possible setups of an instrument [as in organ] etc.) and needs 2 Gigabyte of free space. All patches are loaded quickly and require a fair amount of memory. Just imagine how many hardware synthesizers, hours of sampling, programming and setting up sequencers, mixers, recorders etc. would one specialist need in order to achieve the same results ! You can also compare all those hardware components' price (thousands of euros) to a good personal computer's cost : 1200 euros at the very most. So, one would certainly ask : Are we having good times for home studio musicians ?
