Information
Yes, yes, it is official for some time now. Well, is this so important ? Maybe yes, maybe no. The fact is that the first Macintosh system running on an Intel platform will appear in Spring 2006. It is perhaps a risky move for Apple but if things do go as they have planned them, then it may make them even stronger. The previously used IBM PowerPC processors will be a matter of the past - it is said that Apple was not satisfied with IBM's variety of available PowerPC chips for use in Macintosh Systems. Of course, regardless of any changes in the Operating Systems of the Macintosh per se, all current developers should make significant changes to all their Macintosh products in order for them to run at new Intel platforms properly, and this will necessitate - possibly expensive - software updates if one decides to upgrade to a new Macintosh Computer - especially after Spring 2006. Apple has already begun organizing the whole story by helping developers making out how to easily and cost-efficiently alter their own software. There are certain powerful tools to help them out there, so, that, maybe porting is not such a heavy job to do after all. However, we can't have all ! Another theory is that in the long run almost nothing will change and Macintosh software will run faster and better. Even Windows Operating System may be able to run at the new Macintosh with the Intel CPU chips (well, this is a rather distant probability actually) ! You have better have a look at the following article describing the whole landscape after this significant decision by Apple : http://ptech.wsj.com/archive/ptech-20050609.html by Walter S. Mossberg, explaining a lot of interesting facts, ideas and aspects. If you were planning to buy a Macintosh then you have to read this article !
