About music software
My first approach to the use of the Special Edition of Vienna Symphonic Library was to put each instrument in a separate VST instrument in Sonar 2! I could not have done otherwise in order to make an orchestra to sound all together, because the instruments in the Special Edition are simply not multitimbral! However, the CPU consumption in this case was particularly disturbing: in an Intel processor - with one core naturally - of a 3 Ghz frequency, I could barely hear 20-25 intruments at the same time without problems, and this without using any effects and having the Special Edition in a lightweight yet quite usable form. This is enough for anyone to work, but compromises were many: in addition, the audio card's latency did not allow a decent recording (100 msec). Moreover, the Windows swap file had to be disabled. This was the case till I tried to use the software Vienna Ensemble 2. This is free from the Vienna Symphonic Library company if you have purchased a product. This is in fact a VST instrument which "incorporates" up to 16 channels of the Special Edition library, which would normally be placed in separate VST instruments, with obvious results in computer resources consumption. So, with 3 Vienna Ensemble instruments I was able to put 35 instruments in their normal and not light form (meaning with the release sample activated) and with a regular use of effects. Thus, with the latency of the card at 22 msec there was never any problem in the reproduction of all of the 35 instruments! The relatively low CPU consumption also allows - along with the avoidance of "clicks" etc. - the use of other music applications at the same time eg. GigaStudio, Synful Orchestra etc. so giving tremendous opportunities for orchestrations. Thus, by using the Vienna Ensemble 2 application you can manage computer resources and the Special Edition in a much better and more efficient way. So, the use of Vienna Ensemble 2 is proposed as a compulsory element to anyone who deal seriously with libraries of Vienna Symphonic Library company. Although the memory required to use the Vienna Ensemble is somehow more (although the increase seems to be specific and not proportional to the number of instruments used) the decrease in CPU utilization is so high that allows a swap file to exist, smaller latency on the sound card and many other facilities.
