Tuesday 5 October 2004 : Do you believe in Absolute Pitch ?

Information

Do you believe in Absolute Pitch ?

You know what Absolute Pitch is, don't you ? It's the ability to understand the absolute tonal pitch of a note you are listening to without any further assistance, eg. without trying to locate the actual key of the piano that is producing the corresponding pitch you are hearing, without the use of a tuning fork etc.

Sounds easy, e ? Well, try to do it then ! The laws of probabilities say that you are not going to succeed in finding the correct pitch to tell ! Except ... except ... for the case you have been born with the Absolute Pitch capability yourself ! In this case, you will simply have a great ease at recognizing without any difficulty all those pitches at an eye-glance speed ! This fact, along with other abilities, will inevitably help you become a very good musician anyway. Most great classical composers are widely believed to have had the Perfect Pitch - this fact helped them improve their art even more and live for ever as legends of music.

So, what ? You tried to find out whether you have Perfect Pitch and you just failed ? Well, don't worry, I am still living as well :-) A musician can certainly live without the ability of Perfect Pitch ...

But, wait, I think only a conservatory can give the right answer to all these ...
A conservatory, or, rather an ... unconservatory ?!

Well, if we finally decide to focus on unconservatories, I have just found one (!) :

http://www.unconservatory.org

Wow! A great site (apparently) created by Kirk Whipple and his wife. Have a very good look at it please, it deserves it ! (**) But, this is not our issue here ... Please read carefully the following link : http://www.unconservatory.org/perfect_pitch/ ! Here, we are ! Information about perfect pitch ! To be precise, wealth of articles about perfect pitch issues : how is to be evaluated whether one has this special ability, whether all those people have something special, the true essence of perfect pitch, the positive and negative consequences of having the ability of perfect pitch, and, among others, how to acquire and exploit this very special ability for yourself !! Yes, sounds very good ! Kirk Whipple writes a lot of advices - literally speaking, it is almost a small course - about how to start identifying the exact pitch of all the sounds you are hearing ! Yes ... that's right, all those course steps are taking a while to be implemented, one needs patience and good will, the necessary qualities of life anyway ... But, Kirk eventually managed to own perfect pitch ability without having been born with it, so, why not yourselves ?

Just help it with a fresh try :

http://www.unconservatory.org/perfect_pitch/ (***) (****)

(**) Talking about a lot of subjects that concern musicians - apart from perfect pitch issues and a very novel name :-) - this very good site also includes a great variety of : music articles (by various authors), advices, directions, views, teaching methods, good artistic material, humor, forums, links, presentation of the authors themselves and many-many more! Just join the "unconservatory" : http://www.unconservatory.org ! You won't regret it !

(***) Kirk Whipple's site is completely free - this guy really loves music!

(****) When (undersigned) artissimo.gr editor eventually acquires himself the Perfect Pitch gift, then, be ready to read an article about the brought differences in musical perception !
