Information
Whenever I want to be sure about my views on matters of form and structure, I heavily rely on my "think tank" : it consists of the following books : - Morphology of music, by Amarantos Amarantidis. The excellent Greek musician has written a very good series of theoretical books : this is one of them. Among other topics, he deals with the organization of music through ages, he gives historical notes on genres and styles, and, most of all, he is offering a very detailed explanation of most historical musical forms and their categories. The book also features a good deal of certain works' analysis. - Fundamentals of Musical Composition, by Arnold Schoenberg (translated in Greek by K. Nasos) This is the Bible of morphology for composers : only a teacher of Arnold Schoenberg's calibre could have written such a masterpiece ! Every musician should read it at least one time every a couple of years for his entire life ! It covers all basic matters of form : phrases, motifs, linking them, all kinds of construction, accompaniments, musical mood and a lot of small characteristic forms. It is full of exercises and general instructions : one should use his brain all the time when reading Schoenberg's books ! - Traditional Harmony, Advanced Exercises, by Paul Hindemith (translated in Greek by K. Grimaldis) Written by the great Paul Hindemith. All those exercises are aimed for students who would like to try relatively simple kinds of compositions. The instructions are very helpful and a good deal of matters considering forms are discussed here in context of the composition exercises. Great book too! - Introduction to Morphology of Music, by Erwin Ratz (translated in Greek by K. Nasos) Well, this is a book with great theoretical context, although one should take his time and study it with care and great patience. It mostly focuses on works of J.S. Bach and L.van Beethoven. Its analysis power is impressive and should help anyone with great ambitions for analysis and/or music composition. - Musical Analysis, by Dimitris Athanasiadis. A small but instructional book by a great Greek teacher. It covers a large scope of analysis problems and procedures. Can give help to any musician. - Structural Functions in Music, by Wallace Berry. A relatively difficult book to read, but, through its hundreds of examples one should take a lot of information on matters of form in a detailed level. All those books are giving ideas and directions in order to solve problems of musical form and construction.
