Experiences
Listen to this very carefully because I carried out some experiments of my own (my family didn't appreciate it very much, of course, he, he, he :-) ). Well, clear first is coming Darius Milhaud ! "Scaramouche" (meaning swashbuckler, or the one to pretend the brave guy without actually being brave ?!) and various other compositions of him for 2 and 4 pianos are characterized by a "cabaret-mood" - if I am allowed to say - which is matching gambling activities more than perfectly! Not very far away comes George Gershwin with his Concerto in F, as well as with the "American in Paris", giving a flawless "jazz-timbre" to our favorite card-games. Good response was also given by the waltzes of the Strauss family (were they actually gambling themselves ? :-) ). I am scolding myself for not having tested Igor Stravinsky's "Ebony" concerto (if I can remember well it has got some jazz elements itself). On the opposite, there was no good performance by Debussy (reverie is not the best choice when you must be concentrated on a ... cursed deck of cards!) nor Rachmaninov (4th concerto for the piano), but, even Mozart didn't manage well (that is rather peculiar, isn't it ? ). The final result is revealing the fact that all of us have inwardly combined the card-games with the music of a cabaret or/and jazz music. It is just as well that we are doing it (I mean the cards, ah!) just for the new year's sake! :-) PS - Honestly, do you know about the fact that whoever is losing at cards is winning at music ? :-) I discovered it a couple of days ago !
