The procedure of writing music is a kind of experience not to be explained easily in concrete terms. It should be described just as an adventure : a constant, hard but also highly compensating adventure. This adventure begins when the itch for creation appears. Other artists have this feeling in a steady fashion, others only occasionally are motivated by it. This inner prompt for composing is everything : it signals the start of a lot of parallel mind processes that are working together perfectly and are triggered either on purpose or unconsciously. The big question is why to write a piece of music ? You are supposed to be expressing something different from what you are experiencing all day long. If you are not willing to do exactly this thing or simply you are not able to do so, then you have better forget about it ! It is not worth the effort ! Of course, all mental processes during actual composition time are somehow leading to the underlying technical background. One is sitting at the piano to write the notes that are waiting for him in his head, another is holding the guitar. More modern approaches are involving a modern studio with computers, synthesizers, mixers etc. As the process of composition is being continued, mental impulsions are being satisfied and the strong willing to get the music piece finished in the best possible way is stuck into the head. At the same time, the joy of creation - free of the anxiety to use all of the initial inspiration material - is gradually beginning to dominate. The satisfaction of composing a piece of music that is expressing ourselves in our very special way of acting, feeling and thinking is beyond any description with the use of written language - perhaps only music could describe it in absolute perfection ! It is the pleasure of ultimate self expression along with the contentment of a satisfactory creation capability that is filling one's heart and mind. The music piece is there because you felt it, you wrote it and you could only express yourself in that way : this is fantastic - it is also the property of all arts around us ! All composers - amateurs and professionals - are feeling the same happiness and sense of fulfilment. Music composition is highly demanding since it is requiring very special skills - especially for the professionals. Nonetheless, music creation is also highly compensating, giving back a feeling of absolute gladness that is hard to describe. This is the unique essence of music and the unique substance of music creation.
