Experiences
It is morning - this happened lately - and Markos Moisidis (ERA-3 - the programme was "Musical cross-roads") is offering a pleasant dose of Liszt : "The play of the water in villa "d'Este" " (if I remember OK) from the third volume of Liszt's collection "Years of Pilgrimage" - for the piano naturally. This piece was written by Liszt at a rather mature age with source of inspiration a voyage to Italy. Apart from its satisfactory duration, this piece is combining integral virtuosity, fruity inspiration and the expressional maturity of the composer as use of various technical means is concerned. I must confess that I like it more than other Liszt's compositions which are maybe more known to the public but they also present a - sometimes - tiring view of the term "virtuosity" (of course this is a personal opinion). Especially the initial part of the specific composition, which is presenting a burst of virtuosity and is "simulating" the play of the water is truly very impressive! - and must be a very difficult piece to perform too. You are actually feeling as if you are looking at a flowing rill while the pianist's hands are running at a dizzying speed covering the full fingerboard's length ! However, also the rest of the piece has been proven to be full of inspiration and interest - there is a great deal of musicality and consistency. This small story was the signal for me to examine further Liszt's music. During the specific programme we could also listen to Mendelssohn's symphony no. 4 ("the Italian"). In fact this is one of the most known - and perhaps one of the best - compositions of Mendelssohn. It seems as if Italy is giving inspiration to all those people who are visiting the country (should I also make a trip to Italy this summer ? :-) ).
