The source is www.in.gr (great Greek portal) - According to a research made by a radio station playing classical music in a European country, it was revealed, that, while a decent percentage of that country's children are playing a musical instrument, however, when they are being asked various questions about simple subjects concerning classical music (eg. they are asked to name some famous classical music composers), then, the results are rather dissapointing. Moreover, some children are also incapable of distinguishing (alas!) between performers and singers of classical music and those of other musical genres (eg. pop music - this fact reminds me of some jokes we were telling each other when we were small children too :-) eps! not so long ago indeed! ). They are also finding difficulties in naming timbres of well-known musical instruments (sorry, but, if one cannot even ... add two numbers, then you cannot expect him to understand about ... differential equations! :-) ). What ? I didn't catch you ... Nooopes, we are not talking about Greece, you are wrong ! We are not even talking about a Balkan country here. Just think of a place more north-west-west :-), which is the country you are thinking of ? (no, this is not ... Iceland :-) ). If you are having any kind of curiosity to read the actual article, here is the corresponding link : http://www.in.gr/news/article.asp?lngEntityID=402182&lngDtrID=253 (yes, it's in Greek - I just couldn't find the archived article in English - I am sorry! - anyway, if Beckham did play more the ... piano, then the results of the investigation would naturally have been totally different! Yes, yes, yes, it's all about Great Britain...) Three comments apply here : a) As the old saying goes, there are the common lies, and there are the polls as well ! b) If one thinks more about it, even if in Greece classical music is not especially popular, I cannot imagine those things described by the investigation mentioned above happening here (and I am also suspicious of whether this is the case in England as well). c) Only British would ever publish such an "evil" research. One should congratulate them for this sole reason either way !
