Exactly a week ago, on Wednesday the 4th of May 2005, the well-known Greco-Georgian orchestra conductor Odysseas Dimitriadis died. Further down you can read a very short biography of his : Born in Batumi of Caucasus, at a small age he started violin lessons and later he comprehensively studied composition. Some years later, he completed his studies at the Leningrad Conservatory graduating as an orchestra conductor. He had been conducting a lot of important orchestras in Soviet Union for several decades, giving a lot of concerts in other countries as well. He also helped a lot of notable musicians to learn how to conduct the orchestra. In 1980 he was the maestro of the symphonic orchestra at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Moscow, where he also performed an orchestral arrangement of his own based on the Olympic Hymn of Spyros Samaras. He was honoured by the Soviet government for his total artistic offer. To the end of his life he was living permanently in Greece but lately he had returned to Tbilisi (Tiflis) where he died.
