Information

Recently, I was reading - in a rather cursory manner - the word book of Beethoven's sole opera "Fidelio" ("Music" series - Zacharopoulos editions - by author G. Drossos - translation of word book by Alexandra Kabouropoulou - soprano). Despite the fact that I never liked the love stories as opera subjects (because I believe that they are trying to give an excessive sentimental dimension to the action of the opera that is anyway already present there in a normal "quantity" with every good melodrama), the libretto under discussion - and mainly its story - are well-made enough, are presenting a degree of novelty (in my personal opinion) and they are attaining their goals : to show the power of the eternal love. (***) Of course, a fair share of that beautiful result must also be given to the translator (the original libretto was written by Sonnleithner and Treitschke). For once more, we can watch a try based on the right specialized knowledge, the hack value and the good co-operations that is reaching some pretty attractive results. Bravo ! (Anyway, some time or other, I should also listen to the actual opera myself !) *** *** HOWEVER, WE HAVE SAID ENOUGH FOR TODAY - I am leaving you to imagine Florestan and Eleonora of your own dreams ! :-) [look at the note (***) below].

*** In short, the story's plot is the following : Florestan is imprisoned in the deep dungeons of jail by his Machiavellian enemy and prison commander Don Pizarro. Florestan's wife, Eleonora, gets dressed as a man (Fidelio) in order to save him and becomes a loyal assistant of the guard Rocco. The crucial moment comes when Don Pizarro is ready to kill Florestan because the prison is going to be inspected by minister Don Fernando, which is interested in Florestan's case but he thinks is not alive any more. At the last moment, Eleonora manages - putting herself in great danger - to save her husband for good and all by helping minister Don Fernando understand all of Don Pizarro's intrigues against him that had happened till that time.
