Information

Luciano Berio departed his life in the magic world of the serial music and the accidental in last Tuesday the 27th of May 2003. He was an avant-garde composer loyal to his principles and always willing to search for new ways as musical expression and pioneer spirit are concerned. His activites started after the second world war, not away from the other "pioneers", Boulez and Stockhausen. He mainly used generalized serialism along with a variety of electronic means (world-famous for his electronic studio in Milan which was founded by himself) - later, he also dealt with the music of the random (Aleatorism). Some of his special characteristics are his innovative ideas for the use of the human voice in his music works, as well as social dimension in his creations which were destined for the music theatre. His compositions are definitely sounding especially modern and with a certain "avant-garde" "fragrance", a fact that obliges a non-experienced listener of classical music to approach the whole subject with an extra attention. **   ***

** Speaking personally, I will remember two things for ever : the very particular sound of the compositions - which is independent of the specific intrumentation-orchestration, as well as the pretty "advanced" scores of the composer (in general, the scores that are related with music of the random are using various peculiar symbols and not especially many normal notes!). The fact is that classical music owes too many to people who are speaking only they are having something really interesting to say ! Pieces like eg. the "Sequenza IX a" (1980) for solo clarinet - of a duration of almost 15 minutes! - are characteristic of the how "seductive" is for one to write a whole world of fantasy based on serial patterns resulting in a sound that is touching the very deep mental levels, but, in a way that is basically being hidden! Berio's music is an amazing experience - however, one should have a definite theoretical ground and give it an adequate mental try : serial music requires the listener's strong fantasy in order to "function" well !

*** A few more words as well as a concise work catalog of Luciano Berio can be found at the column "Composers - Postmodern Era" of the present website.
