Sergey Rachmaninov (1873-1943)

NATIONALITY

Sergey Rachmaninov (1873-1943) : Sergey Rachmaninov was Russian.

IN GENERAL

Sergey Rachmaninov (1873-1943) : Rachmaninov is a late representative of the Russian national school who was clearly moving within romantic frames, following, however, more "western" directions of expression in comparison with other figures of the national school of his homeland. By overcoming various difficulties - personal or not - which had appeared in the beginning of his career and his life in general, Rachmaninov finally accomplished to be accepted as a skilful pianist, a conductor of the orchestra, and also as a romantic composer, finally residing permanently outside the Soviet Union, because of the political situation that existed.

STYLE

Sergey Rachmaninov (1873-1943) : Rachmaninov's style is very romantic and it particularly existed during an era in which a lot of other composers had passed on completely different views as musical genre is concerned. Rachmaninov's compositions are generally including the piano and they require a lot of virtuosity - especially Rachmaninov's concerts for piano, some of them seldom performed because of their exceptional difficulty ! The writing and the texture of the orchestra sound refer to quite modern sound, the harmony is advanced enough compared to the romantic era, but it remains in strict tonal borders. A lot of Rachmaninov's pieces for piano are nowadays a permanent - and irreplaceable - part of international piano repertoire.

WORKS

Sergey Rachmaninov (1873-1943) : Rachmaninov's output is extensive enough - Vocal music : 6 operas ("Francesca da Rimini"), various hymns, a mass and various secular songs. Orchestral music : 3 symphonies, 4 concerts for piano, various symphonic poems. Chamber music : several pieces for various combinations of instruments (usually with piano). Piano music : Preludes, Nocturnes, Suites, Sonatas, Various Dances, Variations and others.
