Sergey Prokofiev (1891-1953)

NATIONALITY

Sergey Prokofiev (1891-1953) : Sergey Prokofiev was Russian.

IN GENERAL

Sergey Prokofiev (1891-1953) : Prokofiev can be considered as the main representative of the stream of Neoclassicism in Russia. Even if in the beginning of his career Prokofiev was innovative enough in his musical tendencies, progressively Prokofiev rather moved to a course of neoclassicism where the tonal processes were presented strengthened, without however particular elements of Russian national tradition present in Prokofiev's music. Perhaps for this reason the official state was not particularly friendly with Prokofiev. In any case, Prokofiev's musical personality was shaped mainly before the revolution of 1917.

STYLE

Sergey Prokofiev (1891-1953) : The style that Prokofiev had developed in the beginning of his course was based on a genre rather dissonant, even if they existed several stylistic differences among Prokofiev's works of this period. After the return to Soviet Union, Prokofiev's style became rather classic, with much simpler harmonies - and with a likely classification in the stream of neoclassicism. Prokofiev's sound gives enough importance to the end of the phrases (cadences) and in the "easy" movement to remote scales, while it could comfortably be characterized as diatonic, but also constantly full of modulations (frequent changes in the scale).

WORKS

Sergey Prokofiev (1891-1953) : Prokofiev's output is large with enough weight in modern music - 7 Symphonies, symphonic suites (as e.g. on Hebrew themes or the Scythian Suite), "Peter and the Wolf" (music for children with narrator), 5 concerts for piano, 2 concerts for violin, 2 concerts for cello, 2 string quartets, 11 piano sonatas and many melodies. Eight operas : The Gambler, The Love for Three Oranges, The Fiery Angel, War and Peace etc. 7 Ballets : The Steel Step, The Prodigal Son, Romeo and Juliet, The Stone Flower. Stage music : Boris Godunov, Eugene Onegin, Hamlet. Music for Cinema : Lieutenant Kije, Queen of Spades, Alexander Nevsky, Ivan the Terrible.
