Richard Wagner (1813-1883)

NATIONALITY

Richard Wagner (1813-1883) : Richard Wagner was German.

IN GENERAL

Richard Wagner (1813-1883) : A very important composer and in fact reformer of the operatic art and its aesthetics. Through his numerous operas Wagner explored a large breadth of subjects using rich musical resources and a lot of elements of innovation. Wagner affected later composers - even outside the world of the opera - in a very large degree. As a private individual Wagner had enough controversial ideas and practices but as a musician Wagner met the general acceptance and recognition.

STYLE

Richard Wagner (1813-1883) : Wagner's style is very pioneering for his era, having a very large harmonious horizon and multiplied freedoms in the harmonious connections and in colorations. Wagner applied his own ideas in the instrumentation of the opera as well by growing its dimensions. Wagner used the idea of leitmotiv (continuous motif that acts as a factor of cohesiveness for the whole opera). Wagner also established the "endless" melody (in which the conclusive cadences are being continuously postponed as an idea for interconnecting various scenes) changing completely the form of an opera.

WORKS

Richard Wagner (1813-1883) : In its overwhelming majority, Wagner's work is about operas : The Fairies, Rienzi, The Flying Dutchman, The Ghost Ship, Tannhauser, Lohengrin, The Niebelung's Ring, The Rhine Gold, The Valkyries, Siegfried, Twilight of the Gods, Tristan and Isolde, The Mastersingers of Nuremberg, Parsifal. Moreover, choral works and lieds, 9 overtures, 1 symphony and various pieces for piano. Wagner also wrote many texts-treatises on music, theatre, religion, politics etc.
