English Language : Classical Music : Composers : Romantic Era (1820 - 1880)

Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893)

NATIONALITY

Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) : Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was Russian.

IN GENERAL

Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) : Tchaikovsky is the most famous Russian composer of the Romantic period and one of the most famous composers of all times. Even if Tchaikovsky is not precisely a genuine representative of the Russian school - provided that he uses enough "western" elements and style in his compositions - nevertheless the sound of Tchaikovsky's music clearly reveals the dynamism and the colour of his homeland. Tchaikovsky dealt enough with the opera, however, his compositions that are mostly executed in our days are his orchestral ones. Naturally Tchaikovsky has influenced a large number of later composers inside and outside Russia up to our days.

STYLE

Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) : Tchaikovsky did not agree with the Russian composers of their national school - he followed a more western approach in his music. His melodies are sometimes strong, sometimes sensitive and often melancholic. The power of Tchaikovsky's music is coming from its suitable orchestration that strengthens the desirable atmosphere of the moment. His music has enormous sentimental force and often creates powerful feeling to the audience. Tchaikovsky's most successful works are orchestral - they are performed very often in our days with a big success.

WORKS

Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) : Large and important is Tchaikovsky's output : 10 operas (Eugene Onegin, Queen of Spades etc.), 3 ballets (Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, Nutcracker), 20 choral works, 6 symphonies, symphonic poems (Romeo and Juliet, March Slav, Italian Capriccio etc.), 3 concertos for piano and 1 for violin, 3 string quartets, a trio with piano, a sextet, a lot of pieces for piano, 100 melodies.
