English Language : Classical Music : Composers : Postmodern Era (1945 - 2000)

Pierre Boulez (1925)

NATIONALITY

Pierre Boulez (1925) : Pierre Boulez is French.

IN GENERAL

Pierre Boulez (1925) : Boulez is one of the heads of the stream of serialism (or twelve-tone system when the series applies only to the tonal heights) after World War II, who exerted remarkable influence to the avant-garde composers of his era as well as to many others for years to come. Influenced himself by his teacher Messiaen, Boulez finally dealt exclusively with the twelve-tone composition, which he tried to extend in each possible direction so that he would achieve his expressive aims. Boulez is well-known as a conductor, too.

STYLE

Pierre Boulez (1925) : Boulez began composing in the initial twelve-tone method, then he jumped to total serialism, but Boulez shortly realised the impasse of his directions and he resorted to a model of use of serialism that is stricter but, nevertheless, gives bigger expressive margins. Boulez's aim has always been the effective control of all potential attributes of sound : tonal height, timbre (colour), density, direction, mass. Boulez did not deal with the possibilities of electronic music except for a minimal try. Boulez uses to regularly revise his works even after a lot of performances, because he is always trying to find the better and more expressive placement of his music course. Boulez's current influence is very grand inside France but is difficult to be evaluated outside France (for such kinds of evaluations, a lot of time must always pass in order for us to have enough facts to work on!).

WORKS

Pierre Boulez (1925) : Boulez's work requires study, it has not yet been placed completely through the passage of time - "The Sun of Water" for voice and orchestra, "Nuptial Face" for two voices, chorus and orchestra, "The Hammer without a Master" for soprano and chamber orchestra, "Fold upon Fold" for soprano and orchestra ensemble, "Blazes" for chamber orchestra, "Polyphony X" for 18 instruments, Book for quartet, 3 sonatas for piano, "Structures" for 2 pianos, 2 studies of concrete music, "Poem for the Will" (electronic music).
