English Language : Classical Music : Composers : Modern Era (1915 - 1945)

Paul Hindemith (1895-1963)

NATIONALITY

Paul Hindemith (1895-1963) : Paul Hindemith was German.

IN GENERAL

Paul Hindemith (1895-1963) : Hindemith is a characteristic example of a creator who even if he followed the classic models - as a lot of other composers did during the period of interwar - however, he did it in a very critical manner and in an absolutely personal way, studying in-depth the old music and using only the elements that allowed him to create his own, modern contrapuntal style. Basic is Hindemith's contribution to the significance of the term "Music for Use", that is to say, creating music that is easy to be performed by a small group of musicians - even amateurs - and that is even easier for the common listeners to approach it. Hindemith was chased - because of his progressive ideas - by the fascist government of Germany and he resorted to the United States where he continued normally his work by teaching and applying his own ideas.

STYLE

Paul Hindemith (1895-1963) : The style of Hindemith is basically a polyphonic style - taking as a model the baroque era - which also uses rough harmonies that make frequent use of the interval of the fourth. The result is a music that sounds both as a piece of atonal music and as a result of contrapuntal treatment, but has also certain characteristics of homophony. This result in the sound is owed to the adaptation of old, classic material - that Hindemith for years studied with respect for the tradition - and in Hindemith's personal ideas and techniques that often incorporate characteristic features of the style of Neoclassicism. Hindemith's melodramas are considered to be among his best works. Hindemith was also a keen supporter of "Music for Use" - perhaps because himself was in an immediate way involved in the process of performance by playing often some kind of instrument - which expresses the return to the old (and good) idea that the music is more a "tool" for daily use and should not be "jailed" only in - many times inaccessible - concerts halls.

WORKS

Paul Hindemith (1895-1963) : Hindemith's output is interesting enough, specifically his dramatic music - 8 operas, 3 ballets, choral works, 3 symphonies, a lot of concerts, 6 Kammermusike (chamber music), 7 string quartets, 4 sonatas for violin, 5 sonatas for viola, sonatas for various wind instruments, works for orchestra of amateurs.
