NATIONALITY Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) : Olivier Messiaen was French. IN GENERAL Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) : Messiaen is a composer who exerted great influence to his students by following his own unique path as music composition is concerned. Lending elements from Ancient Greek, Indian and Indonesian tradition, from Gregorian music (with its endless melodies and its absence of rhythm), as well as from the music of nature itself, the birds' singing (which Messiaen recorded and wrote down to music score with the greatest precision), Messiaen wrote music which led international music community to new ways of exploration and search. STYLE Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) : Messiaen attached very big importance to the most precise rhythm of music, in which Messiaen incorporated various obvious or concealed symmetries. For Messiaen, melody was the "heart" of music. Messiaen used orchestrations with instruments of other countries (like the orchestra "Gamelan" of Java), while he also had great contribution to the art of the pipe organ as well as to original techniques of performing for the piano. A work of special importance is the "Mode of Values and Intensities", in which Messiaen first applied the Generalized (or Total) Serialism. Finally, the very personal composer's style did not find any followers, however, Messiaen heavily influenced all the generation of new composers (Boulez, Xenakis, Stockhausen) by being a professor at Paris Conservatoire for a lot of years. Works for pipe organ : The Heavenly Banquet, The Vision of the Eternal Church, The Ascension, The Nativity of Our Saviour, The Glorious Body, Pentecost Mass, the book of the pipe organ.
