Modest Mussorgsky (1839-1881)

NATIONALITY

Modest Mussorgsky (1839-1881) : Modest Mussorgsky was Russian.

IN GENERAL

Modest Mussorgsky (1839-1881) : Mussorgsky is considered one of the worthiest representatives of the Russian national school in the romantic period. Mussorgsky dealt with piano music and also with symphonic works as well as with vocal music and the opera. Certain of Mussorgsky's works were left unfinished (some of them completed or orchestrated by his contemporary colleague Rimsky-Korsakov in a satisfactory way). Among Mussorgsky's most famous works is the opera "Boris Godunov" (especially the version created by Rimsky-Korsakov) and the suite for piano "Pictures at an Exhibition" (orchestrated beautifully by Maurice Ravel).

STYLE

Modest Mussorgsky (1839-1881) : Mussorgsky's music has all the elements of the Russian national school, the romanticism, the covered melancholy and the meditative disposition, but can often be distinguished for its originality and its activity. "Difficult" and grave passages can eventually be "shaped" into cheerful melodies, that, however, usually last for a little. In the most famous work of Mussorgsky, "Pictures at an Exhibition", all of the pictures are finally presented progressively in front of our eyes via the persuasive disposition and the "romantic vigilance" that the composition is inspiring throughout its length. The various innovations of Mussorgsky have influenced later Russian composers.

WORKS

Modest Mussorgsky (1839-1881) : Mussorgsky's output is characterized by enough variety, in any case, certain of Mussorgsky's works were finished or orchestrated by other musicians - Symphonic music : "A Night on a Bare Mountain", 3 symphonic miniatures. Works for piano : 2 sonatas, "Recollections of the childhood", "Pictures at an Exhibition". Vocal music : 64 melodies and songs in 3 cycles : "Without sun", "Songs and Dances of Death", 5 songs on poetry of Tolstoy, the night (poetry by Pushkin), the wish (poetry by Heine), song of Mephistopheles (poetry by Goethe), works for chorus etc. Operas : Boris Godunov, Kovanshchina (finished by Rimsky-Korsakov).
