English Language : Classical Music : Composers : Romantic Era (1820 - 1880)

Johannes Brahms (1833-1897)

NATIONALITY

Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) : Johannes Brahms was German.

IN GENERAL

Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) : Brahms is one of the most important figures of Central Europe during the period of Romanticism which he can be temporally paralleled with the rest of the national styles of his era. Brahms's work was generally more classic and "conservative" compared to other romantics and he was not particularly friendly to the music of List and Wagner who were considered progressive compared to their epoch. Brahms had a large and important musical output. He did not try at all to compose any operas but he only went in for the rest types of vocal music.

STYLE

Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) : Brahms mainly uses classical forms and a rather "strict" romantic idiom (that is, less freedom in the harmony and in the rhythm compared to other romantic composers). Certain individuals consider Brahms as the Beethoven's successor - mutatis mutandis - because his style is quite "classical-oriented", and, in general, according to others, he summarizes the German romanticism and its total accomplishments. Brahms dealt with a lot of different types of music and he presented a large volume of musical output.

WORKS

Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) : Brahms's output is of large interest - Symphonic music : 4 symphonies, 2 serenatas, 2 overtures ("Academic" and "Tragic"), 2 concertos for piano and orchestra, 1 concerto for violin and orchestra, 1 concerto for violin and cello. Works for piano : 3 sonatas, variations on a Paganini's theme (2 volumes), capriccios, intermezzos, a ballad, 16 waltzes. Instrumental music : Various works for pipe organ (preludes, fugues, chorales), 2 string sextets, 2 string quintets, 1 quintet with piano, 1 quintet with clarinet, 3 quartets with piano, 3 string quartets, 3 trios with piano and 7 sonatas for various instruments. Vocal music : 200 songs for piano and voice, a German Requiem, various songs for chorus and a cantata.
