Jean Sibelius (1865-1957)

NATIONALITY

Jean Sibelius (1865-1957) : Jean Sibelius was Finnish.

IN GENERAL

Jean Sibelius (1865-1957) : Sibelius is one of the most important and most famous representatives of the Norwegian national school. Sibelius's name has been connected with the period when his country acquired its independence and Sibelius himself had the importance of a symbol of freedom and national pride. A man with intense artistic personality, Sibelius soon became well-known and very beloved, especially inside his homeland but also outside it. During the last years of his life, Sibelius did not produce any work - perhaps because he did not agree with the course of the modern music as it had been shaped then.

STYLE

Jean Sibelius (1865-1957) : Sibelius's style is absolutely personal and perfectly characterizes him. Sibelius's symphonic music is full of colorations and shadings and is enough elaborated and processed so as himself has been called "the aristocrat symphonist". Sibelius dealt with every possible music kind except for the opera. In the later years of his creation, Sibelius simplified his symphonic form a lot, as well as he did with his sound and his texture - and that was also a more general tendency in that period - finally approaching the "classic spirit". In the last years of his life, Sibelius had completely retired from composition. In general, Sibelius's style had an appreciable effect in the course of European symphonic music.

WORKS

Jean Sibelius (1865-1957) : Large enough is Sibelius's output : The opera "The Maiden in the Tower", works for chorus and orchestra, 100 songs, 7 symphonies, 1 concert for violin, many symphonic poems (among them : "Finland" and the "Kullervo"), 4 Legends from the Kalevala, chamber music and approximately 120 works for piano.
