Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764)

NATIONALITY

Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764) : Jean-Philippe Rameau was French.

IN GENERAL

Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764) : Rameau is the most known theorist of his era and he laid the essential foundations for the study of the Theory of Harmony, which, finally, leads us to the Theory of Composition and to the best organization of the principles according to which someone can write (good) music. At the same time with his theoretical essays, Rameau was also having a career as an organist, while in the second half of his life, Rameau dealt intensively - and also successfully - with the composition of melodramas. Rameau's artistic output is appreciable and relatively extensive, but even more substantial is his theoretical work.

STYLE

Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764) : Even if initially it existed distrust with regard to whether a theorist of music can also be effective in the field of the real composition, Rameau had several successes. His work covers a lot of genres and contains enough variety with bigger focus on the operas. Rameau's acquaintances in the artistic world and the status that he had because of his work, allowed him to experiment enough both in artistic and technical levels with good results.

WORKS

Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764) : Large enough output if one thinks that Rameau's main activity was about theoretical essays : 32 operas, 5 motets for soloist, chorus and orchestra, 7 secular cantatas, 5 pieces for harpsichord, 62 various pieces for harpsichord and 20 theoretical books ("Text book of harmony limited to natural concepts", "Harmonic Source" etc.).
