Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971)

NATIONALITY

Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971) : Igor Stravinsky was Russian.

IN GENERAL

Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971) : Stravinsky is one of the most important composers of twentieth century who to a large extent shaped streams and tendencies and also displayed new artistic ways with many of his works. Stravinsky is considered the "founder" of neoclassicism, which dominated Europe for several years (mainly in the interwar). Stravinsky's first big scandal-success was the first performance of "The Rite of Spring", where, in only a few moments, Stravinsky disputed all "rhythmical" tradition of music up to that day ! Many times in his career Stravinsky changed completely his directions - in the end of his career he turned exclusively to twelve-tone system - and indicated a new way for someone to compose music : by taking into consideration and receiving ideas from music styles which preexisted of his own work. Stravinsky's effect on the younger generations of musicians will also remain enormous.

STYLE

Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971) : Initially Stravinsky was more close to the "mature" post-romantic style - in a way more evolved compared to the last works of Debussy himself which were very innovative in conception - while the dominant element in all of his works has always been rhythm (followed often also from the "registered trademark" of the neoclassicism : the sarcastic mood). Later, Stravinsky followed a turn in his career where he returned to classic tradition - by then Stravinsky signalled the start of the direction of neoclassicism - without however to be difficult for someone listening to his works to understand who the underlying composer was : all the elements of his innovation and his "strong" rhythm were still there. In the continuation of Stravinsky's career a lot of similar turns also existed. Generally speaking, the extent of Stravinsky's work is simply enormous : from the Renaissance and the Baroque music styles to the modern "ragtime" (musical ancestor of jazz). Stravinsky tried in each new work of his to say something novel and fresh and he would not repeat himself as he existed in his previous works (something enormously difficult for someone to manage in real life). Stravinsky's style is very clean and his art can be considered as a "recapitulation" of all the styles that preceded him, being of course very well constructed and irreproachably "finessed". Remember all these words whenever you listen to Stravinsky's music !

WORKS

Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971) : Stravinsky's output is very large, wide and important - Ballets : The Firebird, Petrushka, The Rite of Spring, Song of the Nightingale, Pulcinella, The Wedding, Apollo Musagetes, The Fairy's Kiss, Card Game, Orpheus, The Fight. Lyric Theatre : The Nightingale, The History of Soldier, Mavra, The Rake's Progress. Vocal Works : Oedipus Rex, Symphony of Psalms, Persephone, Canticum Sacrum, Lamentations. Instrumental works : 4 symphonies, Dumbarton Oaks concert, dances concertante, Ebony Concert, concert for piano, concert for violin, capriccio and concert for piano and violin, concert for two pianos.
