English Language : Classical Music : Composers : Preclassical Era (1600 - 1750)

Henry Purcell (1658-1695)

NATIONALITY

Henry Purcell (1658-1695) : Henry Purcell was English.

IN GENERAL

Henry Purcell (1658-1695) : Purcell is considered one of the greatest composers of his era - especially for England. Purcell's work is of a large extent and includes a very important opera, as well as "operas for scene" of an other type (hybrid operas that include semi-independent orchestral music parts), and also ecclesiastical music as an important part of. Purcell also wrote several pieces of music for use at specific occasions, such as the music for the royal funeral ceremony written little before his death.

STYLE

Henry Purcell (1658-1695) : Purcell's musical output consists both of works of a religious content and works for the wide public. Purcell had great technical ease at the use of the natural language as a medium for his artistic aims, and also very good training and perception of the techniques of composition in his epoch - for the opera and the orchestra alike - which were all combined with moments of great personal inspiration. The unique "classic" opera "Dido and Aeneas" is considered an immortal and deeply artistic work - it opened new ways of expression.

WORKS

Henry Purcell (1658-1695) : Purcell's output is large enough, both secular and religious : 1 complete opera ("Dido and Aeneas"), 5 works of "Music for Scene" (a form that is like an opera but gives more independent role to the orchestral parts) as "King Arthur" and "The Fairy Queen", songs and compositions for 50 theatrical works. Ecclesiastical Music : 60 anthems, hymns, psalms, holy canons for chorus a capella (vocal music only), religious songs for 1 or 2 voices and basso continuo (continuous bass that it usually determines the harmony and is performed on a polyphonic instrument), etc. Secular vocal music : 25 odes, secular cantatas, various English canons, 150 songs for 1 or 2 voices and basso continuo. Instrumental music : 15 fantasias for violas, 22 sonatas for 2 violins and bass, pieces for harpsichord, 3 volumes for pipe organ.
