English Language : Classical Music : Composers : Romantic Era (1820 - 1880)

Gioacchino Rossini (1792-1868)

NATIONALITY

Gioacchino Rossini (1792-1868) : Gioacchino Rossini was Italian.

IN GENERAL

Gioacchino Rossini (1792-1868) : Rossini mainly dealt with the composition of operas and he is obviously the most characteristic composer of the so-called "Italian" school of opera. Rossini met the success from the beginning of his activity and in a way he established a "school" which was followed by several Italian composers, more or less famous (Donizetti, Bellini, Verdi in the beginning of his career etc.). Rossini's most successful operas are naturally the comic ones (especially the "Barber of Seville"), while many of his operas' overtures are performed as autonomous orchestral works in concerts!

STYLE

Gioacchino Rossini (1792-1868) : Rossini's style is not particularly "demanding" for the listener : a lot of melodies with an enjoyable sound that are "pleasing" our ear, bright, tasteful orchestration and simple, pleasant scenarios. The more serious operas that Rossini wrote are possessing a smaller share in his activity along with certain more serious works that Rossini wrote in difficult periods of his life. Rossini led the characteristic style of the "Italian Opera" to pretty high levels by using his brio, his inspiration and his technique in the service of his art.

WORKS

Gioacchino Rossini (1792-1868) : Rossini's output has mainly to do with the operas - 34 operas : The silken ladder, The Italian Girl in Algiers, The Barber of Seville, Semiramide, William Tell etc. Religious music : Stabat Mater (hymn), a lot of vocal pieces, hymns, cantatas, 5 quartets and pieces for piano.
