English Language : Classical Music : Composers : Romantic Era (1820 - 1880)

Georges Bizet (1838-1875)

NATIONALITY

Georges Bizet (1838-1875) : Georges Bizet was French.

IN GENERAL

Georges Bizet (1838-1875) : Bizet is certainly the most important representative of non-Italian opera of his era and a composer that left interesting output, a part of whom is still performed in our days. Bizet began as a virtuoso pianist but he soon went in for composition. While Bizet's non-operatic works enjoyed general acceptance, his operas did not become easily accepted and loved by the public - at least during Bizet's lifetime. After several years, however, recognition began to come, which is naturally maintained up to our days.

STYLE

Georges Bizet (1838-1875) : By maintaining a clear French style and finesse, light - slightly reminding of Mozart as the fast flow of phrases and the charm of melody are concerned - but also expressive, Bizet's music constituted the perfect "vehicle" for the expression of his artistic ideals in the area of melodrama. Bizet's masterpiece, "Carmen", has a passion and a liveliness that we can also find in the remaining works of the composer, also underlining Bizet's deep relation with music as well as the perfection of all of his expressive resources. Bizet's operatic output achieved little by little to rise to prominence despite his era's fashionable light comical operas of the "Italian" character.

WORKS

Georges Bizet (1838-1875) : Considerable variety characterizes Bizet's output, his most known work being for sure the opera "Carmen" - Symphonic Music : 3 Overtures, Symphony in C, Roman Symphony, Small Suite. Instrumental and Vocal Music : Songs of Rouen, Chromatic Variations, Nocturne, Children's Games (12 pieces for piano duet), approximately 50 Songs for Voice and Piano, Duos for two Voices, "Te Deum" etc. Operas : The Pearl Fishers, Ivan the Terrible, The beautiful maid of Perth, L'Arlesienne, Don Procopio, Carmen.
