English Language : Classical Music : Composers : Romantic Era (1820 - 1880)

Franz Schubert (1797-1828)

NATIONALITY

Franz Schubert (1797-1828) : Franz Schubert was Austrian.

IN GENERAL

Franz Schubert (1797-1828) : Schubert is the great creator of the lied of the romantic period and is considered one of the purest and most inspired romantic composers. Schubert wrote a very large number of songs, in which his great talent is being revealed. Generally, Schubert's output is somehow unbalanced, result of his unsettled and "bohemian" way of life and his rather weak character. In any case, in his relatively short lifetime, Schubert achieved to create enough works that will live for eternity.

STYLE

Franz Schubert (1797-1828) : As a composer Schubert depended a lot on improvisation. Exactly for this reason, Schubert's works of a smaller duration are generally of a better level compared to those of a bigger duration. Schubert's music is romantically dramatic, transparent, melancholic, from time to time light but also sometimes deep. It is also spontaneous and has a freshness mixed with despair and melancholy. Generally Schubert prefers the short - but also nearly perfect - works, where he can more easily express his art in a very unstrained way that describes himself.

WORKS

Franz Schubert (1797-1828) : For its most part Schubert's output is about songs : Vocal Music - 603 lieds separated in 3 large cycles ("The Fair Maid of the Mill", "Winter Journey", "Swan Song"), 15 unpublished operas, 6 Masses, choral works, vocal quartets and trios. Instrumental Music - 9 symphonies, 2 overtures, 16 quartets, a quintet with piano ("The Trout"), a string quintet, 3 trios with piano, 1 string trio, 4 sonatas. Works for solo piano : 22 sonatas, 6 musical moments, 8 impromptus (mainly an improvising form), dances.
