English Language : Classical Music : Composers : Classical Era (1750 - 1820)

Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809)

NATIONALITY

Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) : Franz Joseph Haydn was Austrian.

IN GENERAL

Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) : Haydn is considered rightly the first real composer of the classic period, at some way Mozart's and Beethoven's precursor. Haydn dealt a lot with the form of symphony and incorporated crowd of heterogeneous elements in his musical compositions with big success. Genuine "successor" of the Mannheim genre, Haydn organised symphony in a bigger and more precise frame than before by setting mostly to it his personal seal. Generally, we can consider that Haydn made all these improvements in the musical themes and in the musical forms upon which other classic composers will depend in order to create their well-known masterpieces.

STYLE

Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) : Haydn's style is skilful and completely organised with regard to the thematic consistency and the architecture of each work. His thematic treatment, anyway, was used as "raw material" by later composers. Haydn's themes are initially being exposed in a demonstration mode and then being processed in a suitable way giving thus a sense of cohesion. The style is "classic" with the sense that it absorbs foreigner elements easily. The usual music forms that Haydn used were the (since then) "classic" ones : the various forms in 3 parts (like eg. the Minuet), the form of the sonata and the form of variations.

WORKS

Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) : Enormous (in importance as well!) - in any case not only symphonic - is Haydn's work : 104 symphonies, 16 overtures, 35 German dances, 8 Nocturnes, 7 marching songs, 31 concertos for various instruments, 62 sonatas for piano, 21 trios for strings, 45 trios with piano, 84 string quartets, 48 songs, 17 Italian operas, 3 operas for puppet theatre, a German light opera, 46 canons, 14 masses, 4 oratorios and various other religious works.
