English Language : Classical Music : Composers : Romantic Era (1820 - 1880)

Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847)

NATIONALITY

Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) : Felix Mendelssohn was German.

IN GENERAL

Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) : Mendelssohn's art is considered to assemble an alloy of classical and romantic elements, but, perhaps is a little more "typical" than it should have been, like following the rule a lot more times than disobeying it. A part of Mendelssohn's output is very popular to the public, especially the "Midsummer Night's Dream", perhaps his best work, that was composed when Mendelssohn was hardly seventeen years old!

STYLE

Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) : Mendelssohn's style is clearly romantic, but also gives accent and importance to melody and rhythm - elements of classicals. Moreover, as matters of technique are concerned, Mendelssohn uses the classic models widely. Despite Mendelssohn's very good moments, that is, his works that are executed regularly even today, Mendelssohn's compositions are lacking the "something more", this flame that would make even larger part of his musical production attract our attention up to our days.

WORKS

Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) : Mendelssohn's output is of large enough variety : Symphonic Music - "A Midsummer Night's Dream", Various Overtures, 5 Symphonies, 2 Concertos for Piano, 1 Concerto for Violin. Vocal Music - 2 Oratorios, Psalms for Soloist, Chorus and Orchestra, Cantatas, Chorales a capella (voices only without instruments), 199 Lieds. Chamber Music and Music for Piano - 1 String Octet, 1 Sextet, 2 Quintets, 2 String Quartets, 2 Sonatas for Cello, 48 Songs Without Words for Piano, 6 Sonatas for Pipe Organ and 5 unpublished Operas.
