Edgard Varese (1883-1965)

NATIONALITY

Edgard Varese (1883-1965) : Edgard Varese was French.

IN GENERAL

Edgard Varese (1883-1965) : Varese is one of the well-known innovators of the modern musical scene, being also one of the pioneers of the movement of "Futurism", that is to say the tendency for using modern (and, even more, industrial) sounds in the musical creation, as well as for treating the musical material as a "plasma" made of various heterogeneous sound masses and not as a series of the well-known "classic" symphonies-dissonances as the works of older epochs did. Varese became more known after he emigrated to the United States (a lot of Varese's works left in Europe were lost) where he faced less scepticism.

STYLE

Edgard Varese (1883-1965) : Naturally, Varese's music is sounding completely anti-conventional concerning creations of older years. Varese gives big accent to the percussion and wind sections and smaller to the string section - Varese regularly uses certain sounds far beyond conventional orchestra instruments (that is to say sounds that are not produced by usual instruments), such as the sound of the "siren", and he faces his available sound material - and more generally his musical composition - as a sequence of sound phenomena. Obviously, Varese is mainly influenced by the sciences and from what these are involving and not by the older romantic perceptions for the music. This led to music that is quite original but also rather disputed by the average listener.

WORKS

Edgard Varese (1883-1965) : Varese wrote several experimental works : "Ameriques" and "Arcana" for large orchestra, a symphony with chorus, "Study for Espace" for chorus and orchestra, "Deserts" for orchestra and concrete music, "Octandre" and "Hyperprism", for winds and percussion, "Ionisation", for two percussion ensembles.
