Domenico Scarlatti (1685-1757)

NATIONALITY

Domenico Scarlatti (1685-1757) : Domenico Scarlatti was Italian.

IN GENERAL

Domenico Scarlatti (1685-1757) : Scarlatti was a great cembalo virtuoso who was also to become a well-known composer of music written for that instrument as well as for the early piano of his era. Son of Alessandro Scarlatti - famous mainly for his melodramatic works - Scarlatti initially tried his luck at the kinds of composition that his father excelled at (operas, oratorios, cantatas etc.) without, however, much of a success. The big turning-point of Scarlatti's career appeared when he began composing for the cembalo, field where almost immediately his great talent was revealed. Traces of the musical material of Scarlatti can also be found in the works of great composers of the classic period.

STYLE

Domenico Scarlatti (1685-1757) : Scarlatti's works were designed mainly with both the cembalo and the early piano of his era in mind. In our days, of course, those works are normally performed on the modern piano without any problems. Scarlatti's style is full of inspiration and marvellous technique, including several innovations and completely new practices of performance that also survive in our days. Scarlatti's great technique of the instrument helped him to compose music that is both real marvel of performance virtuosity and piece of high artistic value as well. On the contrary, Scarlatti's first music works of his life, rather result of pressure or influence of the part of his father, are not something particularly appreciable.

WORKS

Domenico Scarlatti (1685-1757) : Scarlatti's basic portion of output is about the claviers - in important degree it survives up to our days : 555 sonatas for cembalo and forte-piano (the ancestor of piano), 12 operas, 50 cantatas, a mass and several oratorios.
