Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975)

NATIONALITY

Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975) : Dmitri Shostakovich was Russian.

IN GENERAL

Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975) : Shostakovich is one of the most characteristic composers that lived and acted mainly in the years after the October Revolution of the Soviet Union. Shostakovich's musical activity to a large extent went with the condition in the Soviet Union, even if his relations with it were not particularly harmonious - specifically in the beginning of his career - because Shostakovich preferred to follow a more personal way in his expression from the one that the official state would prefer. Nevertheless, Shostakovich's work is considered of a political tinge - Shostakovich suffered the political criticism of his work while he had even recanted publicly many of his works ! - and perhaps it kept pace in some degree with the political and aesthetic changes in his own country.

STYLE

Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975) : Shostakovich, even if he made few travels outside his country, was aware of the music development in Europe and followed in his own course the style of neoclassicism that was quite "fashionable" in Europe at the time. The sarcasm and the irony - but also the influence from "classic" models - are not absent from Shostakovich's first works. As long as time passed, however - and the conflicts between him and the political bureaus, which wanted something more "wide", was constantly going on - so much Shostakovich's music was directed even more to classic beliefs and abandoned "difficult" orchestral colorations and rhythms that created him problems. Shostakovich's eventual style was heroic enough and displays apparent influence by Mahler. Even if his production is very big and wide, Shostakovich is mainly well-known for his symphonic works, which are performed regularly nowadays.

WORKS

Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975) : Shostakovich's work is extensive enough and very interest - 3 operas (The Nose, Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District, The Gamblers), ballets, 15 symphonies, 3 concerts (one for piano and two for violin), 24 preludes and fugues, 2 sonatas for piano, 15 string quartets, melodies, music for the theatre and the cinema.
