English Language : Classical Music : Composers : Preclassical Era (1600 - 1750)

Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643)

NATIONALITY

Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643) : Claudio Monteverdi was Italian.

IN GENERAL

Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643) : Monteverdi is one of the most artistically fertile personalities of the baroque era, having more the opera and less the ecclesiastical music as his main objects. Monteverdi's innovations concern mainly the expansion and the modern way of use of the orchestra, as well as the continuous application of new ideas and forms to the total of his musical production. Monteverdi also tried to import modern elements into the ecclesiastical music of his era. Unfortunately, a large part of Monteverdi's work has been lost.

STYLE

Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643) : Monteverdi's art gave new blow and creative visions to the melodrama. The dramaturgic form of the opera had important benefits from a lot of Monteverdi's innovations : larger and more expressive orchestra, better and more efficient use of the speech and the words in the text of the opera in connection with the musical composition and its technique, spirituality, lucidity and passion in the critical points of action. It is obvious that Monteverdi belongs to the category of the enlightened innovators of the Renaissance era.

WORKS

Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643) : Unfortunately, only a part of Monteverdi's work has been saved up to our days : 18 operas (of which only 6 are saved : Orpheus, Return of Odysseus, The Coronation of Poppea, Arianna etc). Religious music : Sacrae Cantiunculae for 3 voices, Spiritual Madrigals for 4 voices, 2 masses a capella (vocal music only), psalms, 9 books with various Madrigals, 2 books with Scherzi Musicali and a book with canzonets.
