NATIONALITY
Claude Debussy (1862-1918) :
Claude Debussy was French.
IN GENERAL
Claude Debussy (1862-1918) :
Debussy created a great sensation with his impressionistic genre and he gave - along with other innovators composers - new ideas to the world music community which appeared to have found itself encaged in the romantic period without certain important improvements since Wagner's period and on. Debussy's style has been unique and inimitable and he indicated new directions in the form and morphology, as well as harmonic innovations unprecedented for the western music. Debussy is considered the first "authentic" composer of the music of the twentieth century.
STYLE
Claude Debussy (1862-1918) :
Debussy's style does not use by any means the "classic" formal characteristics of romanticism, but is only guided by itself in continuing meanders of melodies that complete each other, without, however, having any further consequences. Debussy's music was considered without concrete form. Debussy's pieces for orchestra are also narrowly connected with their instrumentation because of the lack of characteristic themes (in constrast with the romantic period), thus it is difficult for someone to transcribe them e.g. for piano. As harmonies are concerned, Debussy existed a bold pioneer with the use of diatonic-pentatonic scales and the use of harmonic shapes which up to then were considered dissonant and were avoided.
WORKS
Claude Debussy (1862-1918) :
Debussy's output is large and important : Symphonic Music : Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, 3 Nocturnes, The Sea, Images, Fantasia for piano and orchestra. Chamber music : String quartet and 3 sonatas for various instruments. Works for piano : Suite Bergamask, Estampes, Island of Joy, 2 books with Images, 24 preludes, 12 studies for 2 pianos. Vocal music : Songs for voice and piano on verses of French poets, 2 cantatas. Stage music and opera : Pelleas and Melisande, Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian and ballet music.
