Charles Gounod (1818-1893)

NATIONALITY

Charles Gounod (1818-1893) : Charles Gounod was French.

IN GENERAL

Charles Gounod (1818-1893) : In his own era, Gounod had been considered - unjustifiably and rather because of a general conservative spirit - as being very progressive and he did not have especially big successes as long as he lived. Gounod's nature was very sensitive, almost mystic, and he had very seriously thought in a moment of his life to become a priest, attempt that finally did not make. Even if Gounod's output is to a large extent of a religious content, he did not miss the chance to try his talent in the world of the melodrama, without, however, particular success.

STYLE

Charles Gounod (1818-1893) : Gounod's style had been considered excessively refined compared to the then popular Italian operas of his epoch. The truth is that he was undeniably one of the most important masters of French music. Gounod enriched the musical and vocal expression resources and extended the language of the orchestra. Gounod also reformed the French lyric repertoire thanks to the sincerity of his expression and the solidity of his technique. Gounod's art is full of tenderness and polite directness.

WORKS

Charles Gounod (1818-1893) : Gounod's output is constituted mainly of religious works : 20 Masses, 2 Requiems, 12 Operas (among which also Goethe's "Faust"), 2 Symphonies, various pieces for piano, 140 melodies and various smaller religious compositions.
