IN GENERAL Charles-Camille Saint-Saens (1835-1921) : Saint-Saens is a most characteristic example of a French romantic composer of his era. Saint-Saens was both a piano and a pipe organ virtuoso, he had enough success as a composer in his epoch and he travelled a lot during his lifetime. Saint-Saens has been characterized as the "French Mendelssohn". Saint-Saens's works are now considered to be somehow "out of fashion" and have lost most of their appeal compared to those written by other composers. STYLE Charles-Camille Saint-Saens (1835-1921) : Saint-Saens's style is typically French : precision in the expression, sentiment, elegant melodic lines and bright but careful orchestration. In any case, Saint-Saens's output can be characterized as being conservative and without fail he uses enough "classical" elements in the composition of his music.
