English Language : Classical Music : Composers : Romantic Era (1820 - 1880)

Charles-Camille Saint-Saens (1835-1921)

NATIONALITY

Charles-Camille Saint-Saens (1835-1921) : Charles-Camille Saint-Saens was French.

IN GENERAL

Charles-Camille Saint-Saens (1835-1921) : Saint-Saens is a most characteristic example of a French romantic composer of his era. Saint-Saens was both a piano and a pipe organ virtuoso, he had enough success as a composer in his epoch and he travelled a lot during his lifetime. Saint-Saens has been characterized as the "French Mendelssohn". Saint-Saens's works are now considered to be somehow "out of fashion" and have lost most of their appeal compared to those written by other composers.

STYLE

Charles-Camille Saint-Saens (1835-1921) : Saint-Saens's style is typically French : precision in the expression, sentiment, elegant melodic lines and bright but careful orchestration. In any case, Saint-Saens's output can be characterized as being conservative and without fail he uses enough "classical" elements in the composition of his music. Important contribution to the French music are his melodies for solo human voice. Saint-Saens's "strict" style has influenced several French composers perhaps even more than the value of his music per se.

WORKS

Charles-Camille Saint-Saens (1835-1921) : Extensive enough is Saint-Saens's output : 12 operas (Samson and Dalila), stage music, 1 requiem, 2 psalms, 36 motets, 3 symphonies, symphonic poems ("Macabre Dance"), an Algerian suite, 10 concertos (for piano, for violin and for cello), one septet, 32 various pieces for piano, 9 pieces for pipe organ, 119 melodies and songs, "Carnival of the Animals" (for small orchestra and narrator).
