Bedrich Smetana (1824-1884)

NATIONALITY

Bedrich Smetana (1824-1884) : Bedrich Smetana was Czech.

IN GENERAL

Bedrich Smetana (1824-1884) : Smetana is the national composer of Bohemia. Even though Smetana met several great difficulties in his life - which was eventually marked by a tragic end - Smetana managed to write music which has survived up to our days and which in some way characterizes his entire nation. Smetana's production is mainly focused on the operas, even if as long as he lived they were not performed outside his homeland often - in any case inside borders Smetana achieved the success after strong efforts. In all of Smetana's works the spirit of his homeland is present ; that is why Smetana's contribution to the world music is remarkable.

STYLE

Bedrich Smetana (1824-1884) : Smetana's very good technique and his high artistic feeling that he had made his homeland to appreciate their own music more than they used to before. This fact was also helped by Smetana's talent to recreate and reform the popular tunes and melodies so that they were adapted easily and effectively to what we call "western" music. In Smetana's operas and his symphonic poems we can imagine the stories, the legends, the landscapes and the mores of his homeland, all shaped with freshness and big charm.

WORKS

Bedrich Smetana (1824-1884) : Relatively small but important enough is Smetana's output : 8 operas, 6 symphonic poems with the general title "My Country", a trio with piano, 2 string quartets, a lot of piano works (polkas and Czech dances), chorales and melodies.
