Arcangelo Corelli (1653-1713)

NATIONALITY

Arcangelo Corelli (1653-1713) : Arcangelo Corelli was Italian.

IN GENERAL

Arcangelo Corelli (1653-1713) : Corelli is considered one of the biggest virtuosos, teachers and composers of his epoch. Corelli was one of the first to reach the high virtuosity level at the violin performance - Corelli also teached an entire series of later composers. As a composer himself, Corelli has got a small but homogenous work giving bigger weight to the development of the Concerto Grosso, that was a kind of "orchestral music" of his era (even if the orchestra of his time naturally had very fewer instruments in comparison with the contemporary symphonic orchestra). Corelli met big success and recognition during his lifetime also influencing to a large extent the course of music later of his own era.

STYLE

Arcangelo Corelli (1653-1713) : Even if Corelli was not the founder of the form of the Concerto Grosso, he was the one that "worked out" this new music form, discovering its large possibilities and making it more accessible to the wide audience of his era. Corelli found new ideas in its instrumentation and processed enough the idea of the Basso Continuo (it is the numbered bass that escorts the phrases of the composition and determines the underlying harmony which is usually performed by the cembalo). Corelli used to process all of his compositions to a large extent by seeking the ever-going improvement. Corelli's large popularity caused important influence and also led to phenomena of imitation (naturally, the course of music through the centuries rejects in general the elements of "not fertile copy" and leaves "in life" only the really prototypal works - a lot of examples displaying exactly this phenomenon exist).

WORKS

Arcangelo Corelli (1653-1713) : Corelli's work is relatively small in volume but is full of plenitude and homogeneity. It is about 6 collections of instrumental music in the form of sonata - mainly for violin, cello and cembalo.
