Anton Bruckner (1824-1896)

NATIONALITY

Anton Bruckner (1824-1896) : Anton Bruckner was Austrian.

IN GENERAL

Anton Bruckner (1824-1896) : Bruckner is most famous for the symphonic music that he wrote. Bruckner was a great admirer of Wagner's art even though his own music presents enough differences in the philosophy. Bruckner did not use any texts - with the exception of the Bible - in order to base his musical compositions on them, and looks like all of his output is genuinely intended to be executed only by the most powerful human musical instrument : the symphonic orchestra. Bruckner is still considered a composer with a "peculiar" sound even if his orchestral works have a regular place in the current repertoire.

STYLE

Anton Bruckner (1824-1896) : Contrary to the composer that he admired a lot (that is, Wagner), Bruckner's style is rather more oriented towards clearer orchestral models, that is to say, it does not have any (pre)disposition to support any view or any ideological backgrounds but only to support genuine artistic creation through use of instrumental music. Bruckner's orchestral sound, in any case, is particularly dark and deep, has a religiousness and often reminds of ritual music. Besides, it is not accidental the fact, that, a part of Bruckner's music is of a religious content. Because of Bruckner's virtuosity at the pipe organ, his works are characterized by an idiomorphic technique in composition (perhaps in orchestration as well) and by his habit of making a lot of enhancements to already finished works (by this way troubling all of his music publishers!). However, Bruckner is considered to be a genuine successor of the Austro-German symphonic musical tradition.

WORKS

Anton Bruckner (1824-1896) : Relatively cohesive and interesting is Bruckner's output : 7 Masses, 5 psalms, "Te Deum" (hymn), cantatas for double chorus (chorus with men and women together), secular (not of a religious character) chorales for male choir, 11 symphonies, a string quintet, pieces for pipe organ and piano.
