Alban Berg (1885-1935)

NATIONALITY

Alban Berg (1885-1935) : Alban Berg was Austrian.

IN GENERAL

Alban Berg (1885-1935) : Berg is one of the pioneer composers that used to a large extent at his works the art of twelve-tone composition, influenced in an immediately way by Schoenberg, whose had existed student of (as also had existed Webern). Using in a completely personal way the new musical genre of twelve-tone method, Berg accomplished to create a totally unique style which led to marvellous artistic results - eg. the opera "Wozzeck" is considered a genuine masterpiece of modern music.

STYLE

Alban Berg (1885-1935) : Among the "holy trinity" of twelve-tone system composers - that is, Schoenberg, Berg and Webern - Berg is considered to be the one that used more "approaches" to the tonal sound among all of the three. As a natural consequence, Berg's works are considered to be easier to listen to compared to the other two composers'. In order to accomplish this result, Berg shaped the twelve-tone composing technique in his - perhaps somehow theoretically "unorthodox" - way, which helped his music to output an ideal mixture of tonal and atonal elements, that nevertheless can be almost equally considered as genuine twelve-tone composition, and which had been proved very expressive. Thus, it is not strange that the work of Berg is performed regularly in our days.

WORKS

Alban Berg (1885-1935) : Berg's work is important and is performed often nowadays - Opera : Wozzeck, Lulu. Vocal music : 12 lieds (songs). Symphonic Music : Three pieces for orchestra, Concert for violin. Chamber music and works for piano : sonata for piano, string quartet, 4 pieces for clarinet and piano, chamber concert, lyric suite.
