About books on famous composers
Passing by a large bookstore in Athens and looking in there for some interesting titles, my eye fell on a reissued series of Phaidon: 20th-century Composers. Volumes with more than two hundred pages, books with a large size, the quality of the paper rather modest, but too many black and white photos and surprise-low price (12 euros for each volume!). The range covers several names: I am already "testing" volumes for George Gershwin, Benjamin Britten, Bela Bartok and American Pioneers (covering the most famous names). At the moment I am looking at the first pages of "American Pioneers" and the book is read with great interest. It was a very good opportunity for modern composers biographies in English and at a reasonable price. Such volumes are usually rare, large, expensive and want months to read.
